MONOTYPES (MONOPRINTS)As indicated by the title, Monoprints are one of a kind. They are not prints in the usual use of that word. Prints are generally multi copies of the same work of art. Monoprints are just one and are created only once and are not copied. Many artists before me have used this method - Monotype. Just to name a few - Rembrandt, Gaugin, Picasso, Degas, Matisse, Walter Anderson and Joseph Rafael.
Most of my work is a Hybrid– it is neither a print nor a painting, but a unique combination. Traditionally printmaking techniques were worked in oil-based inks. Now we use water-based inks as well. I use many different media – gouache, acrylics, opaque and transparent watercolors and Creatix paints, which are especially made for printmaking. Paper Every Monoprint is on Paper. My cave paintings are especially effective on hand-made papers made from the Mulberry tree. Plates are used as a foundation for the drawing. Series – I have done several series of Monotypes:
Enhancing Prints When any medium is applied to the print, i.e. watercolor, gouache, acrylic, or pastel it becomes the title medium and it is still a Monoprint. Degas used Monoprints as the underlying base for his painting. His final creation was called a pastel. Walter Anderson’s wood block prints are another example. They have been re-created by his family as a continuous revival of his works. The essence of his hand-worked print is still there and it is an original.
